Bill Maher 05/10/13 Zachary Quinto
Maher nails it when he talks about the hypocritical “Christians” who use the Bible as a cudgel against ‘the gays’. Zach’s expression is priceless here, including the eye-roll at 5:26. :-)
I just want to add that ZQ believes in God. It’s not Christianity that’s the problem, IMO…It’s people justifying their bigotry, -their own repellent thoughts with the idea that an ideal single moral doctrine exists, and of course, they are following it.
If it wasn’t Christianity it very well could be some other belief system, with or without a “God’s” implied involvement.
That said, I do believe that a huge reason why “other” sexualities are shunned is because of the social and legislative weight given to a state of being that is an innately personal thing…
…Just like one’s sexual preference.
I love that one quote that Zach made once about (paraphrased) how bigots had twisted Christianity from a religion of love into one of hate. Also he used to be part of campus ministry as a student, and I’m actually really fascinated for personal reasons to find out more about the evolution of his religious journey - given that he was someone devoted enough to actually *be* in campus ministry - and how it interacted with his sexual identity, because I doubt he had an easy time of it there. I’m glad to have found an awesome church for the time being, but outside of it I’m sick of having my religion attacked in LGBT spaces same as I have my identity attacked in Christian spaces, and wish there were more acknowledgement that the two are not exclusive.
that aside, I’m not sure I fully agree with your point that homophobia/transphobia happens because of political power given to religious groups, given that I’m living in a secular country with strict separation of church and state (although in practice it’s more complicated), and we’re still about 20 years behind the US when it comes to LGBT rights.

Religion, everyone.
No, not religion, just people who do stupid choices. I am a Catholic myself and I can assure you that if my child comes up to me and says that they’re gay, I will not even cringe let alone put them up for adoption, because they’re my child and I will love them with all my heart…regardless of what their sexual orientation is. And if they’re made of fun of, bullied, teased or threatened because of it I will stand right by they’re side with love and pride.
So no, it’s not religion everyone. It’s just people doing the wrong thing thinking that it’s right.

EDIT: oh, it’s fake. -> http://www.snopes.com/politics/satire/gayadoption.asp
it doesn’t sound that bad, actually, especially given that she’s likely to be adopted by people who are going to be really nice to her, knowing this. There are so many homeless LGBT kids on the street - and those living in abusive situations with their biological parents - who would probably love to be adopted by a gay-friendly family, and it shows some consideration on her parents’ part that they aren’t just kicking her out to go fend for herself, but actually hoping she’ll get adopted by people who’ll accept her and care for her.

because people keep asking the same things.
Q: Is Keanu married?
A: No, and he has never been. He did however almost have a daughter with his girlfriend Jennifer Syme, but the baby was stillborn. Shortly after, Syme died in a car accident, thought to be from drug use in conjunction with anti-depressant medication.
Q: Is Keanu gay?
A: Probably not. When asked this in 1990, his response was “No… but ya never know.” In 1995, when asked why he didn’t give a more definitive ‘no’ to shut down the speculation for good, he awesomely replied: “Well, I mean, there’s nothing wrong with being gay, so to deny it is to make a judgment. And why make a big deal of it? If someone doesn’t want to hire me because they think I’m gay, well, then I have to deal with it, I guess. Or if people were picketing a theater. But otherwise, it’s just gossip, isn’t it?” Cut from the article, according to its writer Michael Shnayerson, was the additional quote: “The fact is, I’ve never had a male sexual experience in my life.” (via webmaster Merlin at KeanuWeb)
Q: Is Keanu gay married to Alan Cumming?
A: If he is, Mr. Cumming’s non-Keanu husband would be very surprised to hear that. This rumour actually originated as an April Fool’s joke that a few media outlets took seriously and reproduced, because journalists are getting shoddy.
Q: Was Keanu married to David Geffen?
A: No, that was a hoax. Of course there are the usual conspiracy theorists who think that the hoax itself was a hoax to cover-up the truth, but officially, no. It’s also fascinating how, if reports were to be believed, Keanu was getting married simultaneously in Los Angeles, Hawaii, the Hamptons and France, all while he was off doing Hamlet in Canada. heheh, ‘doing’. :|
Q: Is Keanu immortal?
A: Obviously duh.

This is a conversation I had with a patient a few days back:
Patient: I cannot see how children can survive with two mothers or two fathers, I cannot comprehend that.
Me: But you know what, every single child who has two mothers or two fathers has always been WANTED which is more than I can say for many children. It takes months or even years of planning to adopt or have a child. BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS WANTED AND ARE ALWAYS LOVED.
Patient: Ohhh *speechless*
The next time I came into her room she smiled and said, “Thank you, it is now clear to me that there are too many cruel people in this world and it is not the ones that so many people are talking about.”
She had a tear in her eye and before I left her room she said, “May God bless and keep you safe for He has a special place for you in his kingdom and you will be rewarded for your kindness for I was a stranger whom you knew disagreed with you yet you cared for me like I was family.”
I thanked her again and left for it was the end of my shift. I found out later that evening she had passed away. She was a great woman, she was a woman of God, she was a Nun but she was understanding, loving, compassionate and perhaps the nicest person I have ever gotten to know.
